Obituary for Robert Andrew Fraser

Robert "Bob" Andrew Fraser, 77, of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday, April 26 after a long struggle with dementia. Bob was born on September 5, 1944, in Trenton, NJ, to Robert Gerard Fraser and Josephine Babula. Known for his fierce wit, irreverent sense of humor, and steely commitment to justice and integrity, he will be missed by family and friends throughout Florida and central Texas.

Bob grew up in White Plains, NY, where he developed an early love of baseball. As a center fielder, he dreamed of one day playing for the NY Mets. Bob joined the Marines in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1966. He moved south to attend college at the University of Florida, where he eventually became the editor of the daily student newspaper, The Alligator. After graduating, Bob spent several years as a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times before returning to UF for law school.

After receiving his JD, Bob settled down to practice law in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. As a criminal defense attorney, he defended many clients against capital murder charges and was a lifelong opponent of the death penalty. He took immense pride in being "good on his feet" in the courtroom, and he dreamed of a legal system that was fair for everyone. Despite his issues with its shortcomings, he loved the law, and would have practiced until his final days, had his health permitted.

Later in life, Bob moved to Austin, Texas, to retire near family. He was able to enjoy several years of his favorite hobbies: reading, drinking beer, flirting with the ladies, and spending time with his children. He cherished the many friendships he made in his new home, where he proudly served as president of his local cigar club.

Bob passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 26. He is survived by his 4 children, Meredith, Jake, Lane, and Luke; his cats, Panther and Midnight; and his many friends. A private ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Reach Out & Read (reachoutandread.org) in Bob's honor.
