Obituary for Mary Sue Breuer

MARY SUE McCURDY BREUER August 31, 1931 - September 29, 2022

Sue was born on August 31, 1931 at home in Mission TX to Andrew and Ellen Yeargin McCurdy. The family, including older siblings Martha, John and Virginia, and little brother Robert, moved to Kingsville TX on Sue's 8th birthday. She attended Kingsville schools, graduated from Texas A & I University with a degree in English, and then met and married Joe Breuer.

Sue and Joe settled in Harlingen TX and raised their four children. Joe worked for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a Coastal Fisheries marine biologist. They were active in the First Presbyterian Church, and music was always a central focus in the home and at church. Sue and Joe sang in the church choir, their children were all in school band and took piano lessons, and Sue was church organist for 10 years. Sue was a secretary for nine months out of the year and was able to stay home with her children during the summer months. She enjoyed sewing, and collected remnants and notions from friends to make girls' clothing to donate to different border ministries, and later to Manos de Cristo. The family travelled the US and both coasts of Canada in their popup camper, particularly enjoying the mountains of Colorado and attending Bloys Campmeeting in the Davis Mountains of west Texas, where they purchased property and set up a permanent trailer home she called their "casita". After retirement in the early 1980s, Sue and Joe moved to the hills outside of Dripping Springs and travelled extensively. After Joe's long battle with cancer, Sue was widowed in early 1990 and moved to Austin.

She joined Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of Esther Circle bible study, met with the Visions Seniors group, and for a time accompanied one of the childrens' choirs on piano. She was a member of the Wednesday Morning Music Club, where she held different offices and made countless friends in Austin and beyond who shared her deep love of music. Sue served on the board of directors of Opera In The Ozarks, a training ground for students seeking a career in opera.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Paul Breuer in 1990, and her precious son Carl Matthew Breuer in 2009. She is survived by brother Robert (Shirley) McCurdy of Lubbock, son Martin and his wife D'Etta of Mexia, son Tom of Corpus Christi, daughter Paula of San Antonio, daughter-in-law Deb of Spring; grandsons Marty of San Marcos, Joey (Grace) of San Antonio, Matthew of College Station, and Chris (Brennan) of Joplin MO; granddaughter Amy of Corpus Christi, great granddaughter Shelby of Kerrville, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and their families. The family would like to thank Orchard Park of Kyle, Legend Oaks Rehabilitation, and Enhabit Hospice for their care of Sue in recent months.

A memorial service will be held October 29th at 11:00 AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin, with a reception following. If you care to make a donation in honor of Sue, please consider Manos de Cristo in Austin or your local Habitat For Humanity.
