Obituary for Leonard Gerry Starry

Leonard Gerry Starry was born January 2nd, 1938 to John and Gladys Starry in Corpus Christi, Texas. Leonard grew up on a cotton farm, where he developed a love for working with his hands and making things grow that would last his entire life. As a boy, he learned to operate all types of farm equipment, and became skilled at repairing trucks, tractors and implements.

After being drafted into the Army in November of 1959, Leonard served two years in Berlin as a Heavy Weapons operator in the Infantry, and was trained to fire 105mm howitzer cannons . Leonard became an expert marksman, and served on the Army Rifle Team. Leonard often spoke fondly of the time he served in the Army, but lamented that they would not allow the troops to tour the bunker where Hitler died. Leonard received the Good Conduct Medal and Army of Occupation - Berlin Medal. After receiving an early release for time served over-seas, Leonard was granted an honorable discharge into the Army reserves, but was never called back into active service.

After the Army, Leonard worked as an auto mechanic and in auto part sales, but eventually found work in new home construction in Houston. Leonard was a gifted carpenter, and could do everything from framing to cabinet building.

Eventually, Leonard purchased an 80 acre ranch near San Marcos, Texas with his long time friend Doug Lee, and retired to cattle ranching. Leonard was known for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor, and was loved by his neighbors and his faithful dog Rascal.

Leonard passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on January 18th, 2023. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ronald A. Starry, and sister Bobby Carrol Starry.

A graveside gathering will be held at the Fischer Cemetery in Fischer, Texas at a date yet to be determined. If you would like to be included with updates, please email your contact information to Jay Kramer: jay@aawems.com.
