Obituary for Larry Garvel Hector

Larry Garvel Hector, 68, was born on December 2, 1953, to Garvel Troy and Kathryn Lucille Hector in Coleman, TX. On Friday, March 25th, Larry passed away to his eternal reward at his home in Buda, TX.

Larry Hector graduated from Reagan High School and attended the University of Texas. While majoring in pre-pharmacy, he worked as a security guard on campus, which led him to join the University Police Academy. Upon graduating from the Academy, Larry dedicated himself to a 30-year career with UTPD where he earned the rank of Sergeant and was certified as a Master Peace Officer, served as a supervisor, was certified as a Firearms and A.S.P. instructor, and led many other special details. He was most proud of his time traveling with the Longhorn football team, organizing security detail for the LBJ Library, and his special assignment to protect and provide logistics for Lady Bird Johnson when she came to the library. After retiring from UTPD in 2004, Larry was employed at Harrell Funeral home, and he also established and supervised the security department at Omni Hotel Southpark. He served various booster clubs at Porter Middle School and Crockett High School.

Larry was always able to brighten someone's day with his warm smile and he always had a joke or kind word for those around him. His family and friends will remember his daily weather updates and his love for the University of Texas. Larry was an excellent husband, father, and grandfather. Many of Alicia and Anthony's friends saw him as a father figure and a mentor. Larry was married to the love of his life for over 36 years, and he was most proud of his children and grandchildren.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Garvel Troy and Lucille, His aunt and uncle Don and Neil Starnes, and his brother Greg. He is survived by his wife Cathy of Buda, TX. His daughter Alicia and husband Collin McKnight and their children, Nathaniel, Levi, and Luke, of Indiana, PA. His son Anthony and wife Brittany and their children, Savannah and Madelyn of Kyle, TX. His brother Gary and his wife Kathy of Dripping Springs, TX. He also had numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10:00AM to 11:00AM Monday, April 4, 2022 at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, TX. Services to follow 11:00AM at the funeral home.
