Obituary for Kevin Schmitz

It is with great sorrow that we announce the recent passing of Kevin Scott Schmitz into the arms of his Heavenly Father. Kevin was born on January 21, 1963 to Patricia and Louis Schmitz in Austin, Texas. Kevin lived the entirety of his life in Austin, a proud resident of South Austin. He attended Pease Elementary and Porter Junior High before graduating from Crockett High School in 1981. He attended Concordia Lutheran University for 2 years on a baseball scholarship, and then the University of Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Business in 1986.

Throughout his childhood, Kevin excelled in baseball and football, playing and starring on multiple league championship and All-Star teams at the Little League and Babe Ruth League levels. At Porter Junior High, he was on the district championship football team, and as a senior at Crocket HS he was a member of the citywide championship team. As an athlete, Kevin was a fierce competitor and always possessed the desire to win. And he was no slouch on the basketball court, featuring moves reminiscent of Kevin McHale in his heyday. Aside from his athletic achievements, Kevin sported a delightful sense of humor that attracted many friends over the course of his life. Jefre, his slightly older brother and co-conspirator in many a mischievous adventure, will always look back at their exploits with fondness and amusement.

In 1987, Kevin married Jeanette Lukefahr of Bay City, Texas. They raised two handsome and accomplished sons, Weslee Schmitz (born 1991) and Clayton Schmitz (born 1995). Both Kevin and Jeanette were actively involved in a leadership capacity with the Boy Scout organization beginning with the Cub Scout level. With constant support and encouragement from their parents every step of the way, both boys attained the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout.

Several words that would best describe Kevin as a family man and an employee are self-sufficient, regimented, conscientious, hard-working, thrifty and loyal. He worked his entire professional career as a co-manager of two exclusive dining establishments in Austin. Early in his career, he co-managed the iconic Green Pastures restaurant, using his income to put himself through college. He ended his career at the stately Tarry House Club in the heart of Tarrytown in Austin. Kevin's work ethic, organizational skills, and industriousness earned him tremendous respect.

Kevin leaves behind his two sons, Weslee Schmitz (Iowa City, Iowa) and Clayton Schmitz (Fort Worth, TX); the mother of his two sons, Jeanette; both loving parents, Patricia and Louis Schmitz (Austin); his older brother, Jefre (Salem, OR) and sister-in-law, Beth; uncle and aunt Jay and Tracy Gurley (Sunrise Beach, TX). A special acknowledgement is extended to Bob Ramsey, whom Kevin also leaves behind, who supported and remained at Kevin's side through even the most difficult times.
