John
Garza
Patina
John Garza Patina, 70, of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 12, 2023.
John was born on July 3, 1952, to his parents; Margarito and Consuelo Patina (predeceased). He was one of 11 children; Domingo Patina Sr (predeceased), Cecilia, Margarito Jr, Consuelo (predeceased), Paula (predeceased), Theresa, Mary (predeceased), Lucy, Pete Sr (predeceased), and Santiago. While he did not have children of his own, he took pride in being the best Uncle and oftentimes father figure for all his nieces and nephews down to the great nieces/nephews and great great nieces/nephews. He lived his life humble and extremely family oriented. He took care of his parents in their home until the day they passed. He loved strong, offered life advice, and kindness, and was even a safe haven for his family. Many of us share the same memories of simply enjoying the day that leads into long nights playing cards, Loteria, and board games, especially monopoly. There were many trips to the movies or just adventures roaming East Austin on the city bus. We all knew to be on our best behavior when out with Uncle John otherwise he'd bring out his comb, infamous "how sweet it is" paddle, or get left behind on the next outing. Sometimes, with a quick visit or joining him in his room, you would be lucky enough to get an old story from him. I know we all still believe most were/are real having heard all the details he'd share like the gold webs under his chimney, the gold buried a few blocks away, or the aliens hovering over the junkyard. In all seriousness, for many of us, he was the link to our family's history.
Uncle John is deeply loved and will be missed by his siblings, numerous nieces, nephews (great and great-great), cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, several siblings, nephews, great nephews and nieces, and other family members that are all cherished and missed. The family would like to extend their gratitude to his sister; Cecilia Savala and her family and niece Betty Ann Patina Trujillo for their graciousness in caring for him until the day he passed. A special heartfelt thank you to Betty's husband; Ruben Trujillo and son-in-law; Anthony, for being the extra support needed during the most difficult times. The care, love, and support Uncle John received would not be possible without the Trujillo family.
A visitation will be held Thursday night, Jan 19th from 5 pm-8 pm at Harrell Funeral Home Chapel. Followed by a Funeral service the next day Friday, Jan 20th at 10 AM at the Harrell Funeral Home Chapel.
The family has asked for no photography during the visitation or service. We ask that you respect their wishes at this time.
