Obituary for Hubert Frederick Beck

Hubert Frederick Beck was born on July 21, 1931. His parents were Louis Carl Beck and Martina Clara Emma Beck (nee Dierks). He was baptized into the Body of Christ by Pastor Martin Dicke in Pinckneyville, IL. His hometown was Willisville, IL, where he attended the local school through the eighth grade.

He began preparation for pastoral ministry by attending the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's "prep school", St. Paul's College/High School in 1945. His high school and junior college education took place at that institution. This was followed by four more years of education at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He was ordained and installed as the pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka, IL, in 1956. He and Betty Lee Beaver were married in October of that year.

He served there from 1956 until 1958 when he accepted the call to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Charleston, IL, where he also served as pastor to the Lutheran students attending Eastern Illinois University. In 1965, he began serving as assistant pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Des Plaines, IL, ending his tenure there in 1968 when he accepted a call to become the full-time campus pastor at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He served for there 16 plus years.

In 1982 he and his wife divorced. He accepted the call to become campus pastor at Duke University and North Carolina Central University and married Judith Egbert in 1984. He retired in 1996. In 1997 Hugh and Judy moved to Austin, where he served several different churches in the area as a vacancy pastor until becoming fully retired.

During his many years in ministry, he was the author of a number of articles and books, also serving for many years as a co-editor for the Lutheran Campus Ministry publication known as "Interconnections". He was honored as the first recipient of the (Joseph) Sittler Communication Award by the national Lutheran Campus Ministry Association.

Having celebrated 91 years of life in July 2022, he was received into the everlasting glory on January 27, 2023. Hubert is survived by his wife, Judy, and his four children, Kathy (John Egbert), Cindy (Fred Ferrara), Mary and John Beck (Debbi-and grandson, Daniel); nephews Bart Mueller (Jana), James Mueller, and niece Becky Mueller (Rick Ryder).

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 3701 W. Slaughter Ln, Austin. A reception will follow in the church hall.
