Obituary for Betty Jo Paula Shaw

Betty R. Shaw went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in Manor, Texas.

Betty Jo Paula Rumsey was born in Austin, Texas at Brackenridge Hospital. She attended University Jr. High and graduated from Austin High School. After high school, Betty met a farm boy, Jack Shaw and they were married October 21st, 1944. The two of them were married for 58 years until Jack's death in 2003.

At 16, she started her work experience at Scarborough's Department Store in the cosmetics department. She eventually began what would be a long career with the state of Texas at the Board of Control and after numerous years retired from the Highway Department.

After retirement, she and Jack built a home in eastern Travis County. There Jack farmed and bred running quarter horses. She and Jack attended numerous horse races to watch the colts they raised run. Another activity she always looked forward to was babysitting her grandchildren.

In her leisure time, she liked to watch television which included her favorite television shows, The Incredible Dr. Pol, Swamp People and anything figure skating. To stay active she attended St. David's Community Pool three times a week to get exercise and take part in the conversation. Betty was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of Christ Lutheran Church. Her favorite Sunday outing was going with her daughter Nancy to church and then meeting up with Dorothy and Freddie Richter at Denny's for breakfast after church.

Her wish to never having to reside at a senior home was achieved with her daughter Judy making it possible for her to live out her life at her home until her passing. The last few months it required much effort and commitment on Judy's part.

Betty lived a long, fulfilled life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Betty would not want anyone to feel sorrow in this time of loss, rather, remember all the good memories spent together, and know that she is in the kitchen of Heaven with Jack. Probably drinking coffee with her cat Kitty in her lap. And of course, there has to be chocolate candy with nuts and other goodies for the both of them to snack on.

Betty is survived by her children Linda Shaw, Pat (Al) McCoy, Nancy Wilson, Doug Shaw, Sue Shaw and Judy Shaw; and grandchildren Courtney Shaw, Jackson (Jasper) Napier and Christopher (Rachel) Shaw; and great grandchildren Corbin Napier, Levi Napier, Zoey Napier and Magnolia Shaw along with several nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents William Henry and Anna Louise (Kupfernagel) Rumsey, and her seven siblings Ruth Marie Rumsey Tracy (Tom), William Henry "Buddy" Rumsey, Jack Norris Rumsey, Anne Louise Rumsey Riewe (Olaf), Tommie Elizabeth Rumsey Meredith (K. C.), Jimmy Lee Rumsey (Joyce), and John Norris "Mickey" Rumsey (Nell).

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, at 11:00 am at Greenwood Cemetery, 8698 E Riverside Dr, Austin, TX 78744 with Pastor John Stennfeld officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Greenwood Cemetery Association, 17117 FM 969, Manor, 78653 or Christ Lutheran Church, 300 E. Monroe, Austin, 78704.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
