Obituary for Bertha Rose Carroll

Bertha Rose Carroll, age 95, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022 in San Antonio, TX. Bertha was born on a farm near Blooming Grove, TX on February 21, 1927 to William Burleson Ellis and Mahalia Josie Williams Ellis. Bertha Rose Carroll lived a full wonderful life that revolved around being a military wife, service to her church and most importantly her family.

Bertha attended the Carroll one room school house until transferring to Blooming Grove High School. Bertha was the fourth of eleven children of a sharecropping farmer/rancher. She was not a fan of farm work but being the fourth of eleven children, she did do her share of chopping/picking cotton.

Bertha was married to the love of her life, Billie (Bud), for 60 years. Bertha and Bud were married on April 25, 1944 after he got out of the Army Air Corp. The young couple tried farming for a few years until they decided to enlist in the Army in 1948. The adventure began with assignments to Ft Sill, OK, unaccompanied assignment to Germany for three years, Ft Sam Houston, TX, Pusan, Korea, Ft Hood, TX, Korea, Ft Bliss, TX, Hanau, Germany and Homestead AFB, TX and retiring in 1968. After more than 20 years in the Army, Bud and Bertha moved to Palestine, TX where Bud worked for the TX Dept of Corrections for twenty years.

Bertha was a member of Westwood Baptist Church, where she served on several committees. She enjoyed volunteering in the kitchen to provided meals for church activities.

Bertha was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bud; parents, William and Josie Ellis and 7 of her siblings. She is survived by her sons Lt Col Ben and Dianna Carroll of Spring Branch, TX and Mike and Kristin Carroll of Austin, TX and 6 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, sister, and friend. She had a happy and full live. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many dear friends. We will forever cherish her caring personality. A grave side services will be held on Wednesday, September 14th, 2022 at 1:00 PM at the Dresden Cemetery. On FM Road 744 west of where it crosses FM Road 55, 5.3 mi. south of Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., TX.
